We welcome you to the fascinating study of telecommunications
and networking. Your studies here will be challenging
and satisfying. Your role, as an information professional,
will be to help bridge the gaps between technology and people,
between organizations and society. You will manage the
telecommunications systems of today and help to design the
systems of tomorrow. Our program will give the skills
to be a manager, a designer, a creator, and a user of the telecommunications
systems that will benefit industry, government and institutions.
As you do your course of study here at SIS, I encourage you
to take advantage of all the opportunities that you’ll
find at an “iSchool.” You can take as electives
courses in subjects such as Legal Issues in Information Handling,
Artificial Intelligence Programming Tools, or Geospatial Information
Systems. You can participate in the more 100 lectures
and seminars that are held each year at SIS, examining topics
ranging from information ethics to information security. You
can join a student or professional organization which will
help you to meet your peer students and to gain professional
development skills. There are more than 800 students
in this School. They come from many different countries,
careers, and life experiences. They, like you, want to
know how to better serve society through the management of
information and technology.
You will also find an incredibly diverse faculty here at SIS. They
bring with them a wide variety experience in research, in teaching,
in the field. They are an invaluable resource for you. You
can take a class, attend a lecture, and participate in a research
project. Like a library or a lab, faculty provide you
with experience and knowledge that will lead you to a successful
career.
There are more opportunities here at SIS than I can describe
in this note. Please discover more about them on our
website and take advantage of each and every one. As
you undertake your studies, please remember that our faculty,
staff and administration are here to help you make the most
of this amazing educational opportunity.
